Lady Percy McKinney (June 8, 1866 - November 21, 1937) was born as Lady Percy on June 8, 1866, in Leland, Washington County, Mississippi, into a
prominent Southern family. She was the daughter of Colonel William Alexander Percy (1834–1888), a Confederate veteran, and Nancy Irwin "Nana" Armstrong
Percy (1835–1897), with her father being 32 and her mother 30 at the time of her birth. Growing up as part of the notable Percy family of Mississippi,
she lived in Greenville, Washington County, Mississippi, by 1880. Her siblings included Fannie Percy Pace (1859–1882), LeRoy Percy (1860–1929) who later
became a U.S. Senator, William Armstrong Percy I (1863–1912), and Walker Percy Sr. (1864–1917).
On October 16, 1890, she married Charles James McKinney Jr. (1862–1918) in Knox County, Tennessee. Following her marriage, she spent most of the
remainder of her life in Knoxville, Tennessee, appearing in Civil District 2 of Knox County by the year 1900. Together, Charles and Lady Percy had at
least three children: William Percy McKinney (1891–1953), Mary McKinney Goodson (1893–1970), and Charles James McKinney III (1908–1934).
Lady Percy McKinney, who was a lesbian, spoke often of William Alexander Percy's gay life in Mississippi. In 1917, following the suicide of her brother
Walker Percy Sr., she entered the Phipps Psychiatric Clinic in Baltimore. Having been in ill health for some time, Lady Percy McKinney passed away on
November 21, 1937, at the age of 71 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Floyd Goodson (Mary), located at 18 Hillvale in Knoxville. She was a member of St.
John's Episcopal Church, where her funeral services were held with the Rev. Louis Melcher and the Rev. Walter Whittaker officiating, and she was
subsequently buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville.
